Trump Criticizes Netanyahu's Handling of Gaza Conflict
Former President Calls for End to Fighting, Expresses Frustration with Israeli Leader
Former President Donald J Trump, who has for months urged Israel to end the war in the Gaza Strip as quickly as possible, said on Friday that he was particularly incensed after the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, criticized Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump met with Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, at Mar-a-Lago, his Florida resort, and took the opportunity to voice his disapproval of Netanyahu's handling of the conflict.
"I told him, 'You're playing right into their hands,'" Trump said, referring to Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza. "You're making them look like martyrs." Trump has been critical of Netanyahu before, but his comments on Friday were some of his strongest to date.
Trump also took aim at Harris, who had voiced concern about the civilian casualties in Gaza after meeting with Netanyahu earlier this week. "She's weak on Israel," Trump said. "She doesn't understand what's going on."
The meeting between Trump and Netanyahu was the first such meeting between the two since Trump left office in January. It is unclear what was discussed during the meeting, but it is likely that the Gaza conflict was a major topic of conversation.
